Endodontic Dentistry
In the past, when a tooth was infected, the tooth would be removed. Today, with root canal therapy, a tooth may be treated and saved. Endodontic dentistry or root canal
treatment involves treating tooth pulp and pulp problems of a dieased tooth root.
Root canal treatment is done to find the cause and then treat problems of the tooth's soft core or the dental pulp. The dental pulp is the soft tissue that contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. Dental pulp lies within the tooth and extends from the crown of the tooth to the tip of the root in the bone of the jaws. When the pulp is diseased or injured and cannot repair itself, the tooth becomes non-viable and the tooth bone can become fragile over time. When the infected pulp is not removed, pain and swelling can result with a possiblity of injuring your jaw bones. Without treatment, your tooth may have to be removed
With today's
advances in endodontic equipments and microscope. root canal treatment can now be done more precisely
in diagnosing, restoring and saving a tooth. During treatment, your general dentist or endodontist (a dentist who specializes in problems of the pulp) removes the diseased pulp. The pulp chamber and root canal(s) of the tooth are then cleaned and sealed.
Root Canal Treatment Procedure
Below are the general root canal treatment procedure done at BIDC Dental Center:
- An opening is made through the crown of the tooth into the pulp chamber
- The pulp is removed, the root canals are cleaned, enlarged and shaped.
- Medications may be put in the pulp chamber and root canal(s) to get rid of germs and prevent infection
- A temporary filling will be placed in the crown opening to protect the tooth between dental visits. If infection is severe, additional rounds of cleaning and medication treatment (step 2 to 3) is done until the infection is cleared off. Oral medication may also be adminstered to help control infection that may have spread beyond the tooth.
- In the final step, after root canal treatment is done, a post (pre-fabricated or metal) will be inserted into the root canal and a gold or porcelain crown placed over the tooth in strenghtening the overall tooth.
